Before You Change Everything, Get Curious
Sep 03, 2026
Maybe you're new to the fitness industry.
Maybe you've been here for years and you're finally running your own club or studio. You've taken over an existing business. Bought another location. Or you're expanding your empire.
Whatever brought you here, one thing is pretty much guaranteed.
There will be curveballs.
You'll discover things aren't quite how you thought they were. You'll uncover problems you didn't know existed. You'll find things you were led to believe were very different.
And your natural reaction might be:
Right. Let's change it.
The systems. The team. The timetable. The layout. The pricing. The processes. The equipment.
Maybe some of it absolutely does need to change.
But before you do?
Get curious.
Because you've inherited the business.
You haven't necessarily inherited the context.
Give yourself permission to live in it for a while
It's a bit like buying a house.
You walk through it before you move in and immediately start deciding what you're going to change. That wall needs to go. We'll definitely use that room for something else. And that colour has got to change.
Then you live there for a while and suddenly you're very glad you didn't knock down the wall.
Because once you've actually lived in the space, you understand how you use it.
Business can be exactly the same.
Before you start knocking down metaphorical walls, give yourself permission to live in the business for a while.
Listen. Observe. Ask questions.
Understand why things are done the way they're done before deciding they're wrong. See what happens at 6am, 10am and 6pm. Watch how the team interacts with members. Listen to the conversations. Notice where things get stuck and what's working beautifully that nobody thought to tell you about.
Then make an educated decision rather than a knee-jerk reaction.
Change is good when it's necessary and done properly. Change just for the sake of change can be a disaster.
Everybody will have an opinion
The minute you own or run a business, you'll discover there is no shortage of people willing to tell you what you should do with it.
Listen. But be selective about who you listen to.
They're at a different stage. They're on a different journey. They have different people, different members, different numbers and different challenges.
And they're not the ones thinking about your business 24/7.
They're not walking in your shoes.
Advice can be incredibly valuable. But it still needs to make sense for your business.
Start with the things your members already notice
Whatever is wrong with your club or studio was probably wrong before you got there.
You don't have to fix everything overnight.
Start with the quick wins.
What have members been complaining about? Cleanliness? Maintenance? Broken equipment? Equipment that's got old or gone walkies into a member's bag and was never replaced?
Fix those things.
Because the little things people notice when they're wrong are often the same little things they'll notice when you make them right.
You don't necessarily need a grand relaunch or enormous transformation to show people something has changed.
Sometimes you just need to start doing the fundamentals really well.
And you watch. They'll notice.
Get out into your business
Immerse yourself in the club or studio.
Introduce yourself. Talk to your members. Talk to your team.
And when they tell you something, listen.
Don't immediately defend it, explain it or promise to change it. Ask another question. Capture it. Put it on your wish list.
One complaint doesn't necessarily mean you need to change something tomorrow.
But if you hear the same thing five, ten or twenty times?
Now you've got information.
Numbers tell you what's happening. People often tell you why.
Before you change anything, put it through a filter
We have a real habit of overcomplicating this business.
So before you change something, introduce something, buy something or spend three months creating something nobody asked for, put it through a really simple filter.
PEOPLE. PROFIT. GAIN. RETAIN.
PEOPLE
How will this affect our members and our team?
PROFIT
Will it generate more revenue, improve profitability or create a genuine efficiency?
GAIN
Will it help us gain a member?
RETAIN
Will it help us retain a member?
Not everything has to tick all four boxes.
But it should probably tick one.
And if it doesn't?
Why are we doing it?
Find the little things that make the biggest difference
Better businesses aren't always built through enormous transformations.
They're often built through small, incremental improvements made consistently.
A better follow-up conversation. A cleaner change room. A piece of equipment finally repaired. A manager who understands their numbers. A team that knows what's expected of them. A member being greeted by name.
None of those things sound particularly revolutionary.
That's kind of the point.
Get the fundamentals right. Then keep getting them right.
Inspect what you expect. Measure what matters.
Because you can't improve what you can't measure.
And know which 20% of what you're doing is creating 80% of your results.
That's where your attention belongs.
You don't have to fix everything
Running a business isn't easy. If it was, everybody would be doing it.
There will always be another idea. Another problem. Another opportunity. Another thing you could improve.
You can spend your life buried in all of them.
Or you can work out:
What matters most right now?
Choose your battles. Don't sweat the small stuff. Don't get buried in detail that doesn't change the outcome.
And sometimes?
Good enough is good enough.
You don't need to walk through the door on day one with all the answers.
You need to listen. Learn. Get curious. Make educated decisions and focus on the things that will make the biggest difference.
You don't have to make your business perfect.
Just make it better.
Then make it a little better again tomorrow.
Because those small, incremental improvements?
They add up to some pretty big results.
Better people build better businesses.
