What Does Better Actually Look Like in Sales?
Sep 10, 2026
When we talk about improving sales, we tend to go straight to the number. More leads. More appointments. More memberships.
And yes, ultimately, we want the number to move.
But the number is the outcome.
Better sales starts with what happens before it.
It's how quickly you respond. How well you listen. The questions you ask. The conversations you have. How confidently you talk about value. How consistently you follow the process.
It's the little things you do every day that eventually show up in the numbers.
Better starts with the person, not the lead
Somebody enquires about your club or studio. They're interested right now.
Not tomorrow. Not when somebody gets around to checking the inbox. Now.
Capture every lead. Fast-track them. Get the conversation started.
Because a lead isn't just a name, phone number and email address sitting in your CRM.
It's a person who's just put their hand up and said, “I'm interested.”
Treat them like one.
Better sales conversations aren't transactional
Name. Goal. Membership option. Price. Close.
That's a transaction.
A better conversation is curious. It's natural. It's about listening to understand, not listening to answer.
What do they want to achieve? How do they want to achieve it? Why is it important to them? When do they want to achieve it by?
The right questions can prevent objections from ever becoming objections.
And when you understand what really matters to somebody, you can stop listing everything your club has and start talking about why it's valuable to them.
That's the difference between selling features and finding solutions.
Better gets people through the door
Get as many people into your club or studio as you can. Let them meet the team. Feel the atmosphere. See the space. Imagine themselves training there.
And don't walk around pointing at equipment.
Show them the parts of your business that solve the problems they've just told you about.
That's not a tour. That's a solution.
Better sales is about out-caring the competition
You might not be the cheapest. You might not have the newest equipment, biggest floor space or fanciest technology.
That's okay.
Listen better. Ask better questions. Remember what somebody told you. Follow up when you said you would. Make it easy for them to take the next step.
You don't need to outspend or underprice every competitor.
You just need to out-care them.
And that's a much harder thing to copy.
Better has a process
Not a robotic script. Not identical conversations. A process.
Every lead captured. Every lead responded to. Every conversation moving towards a clear next step. Every appointment confirmed. Every opportunity followed up.
Each time. Every time.
And then know your numbers. What's working? Where are people dropping out? What needs attention?
The gaps between the numbers tell you where to look.
Measure what matters. Inspect what you expect.
And keep asking:
Could I have done that better?
Because better sales doesn't just happen. It's something you keep working at.
So what does better sales really come down to?
For me, it's four things.
CONVERSATION. CONNECTION. CONFIDENCE. CONSISTENCY.
CONVERSATION
Ask better questions. Listen to understand.
CONNECTION
See the person, not the lead. Understand what matters to them.
CONFIDENCE
Know your process. Know your value. Practise until the conversation feels natural.
CONSISTENCY
Follow the process. Follow up. Know your numbers. Do the fundamentals well, each time and every time.
You can have the best sales script in the world. But without these?
It's just words on a page.
Sales is about helping people find the right solution for them.
And when you get better at doing that?
You don't just sell more memberships.
You change people's lives.
And you don't get a better reason than that to get better at sales.
Better people build better businesses.
